61% of women who got abortions reported experiencing high levels of pressure to abort from male partners, family members, or financial/circumstantial concerns (per Sept. 2026 survey)

This fall, with early voting starting September 18, Virginians will be asked to vote on Amendment 1, the proposed Reproductive Freedom Amendment to the Virginia Constitution. This extreme amendment will remove any guardrails on abortion in our state, leading to more abortions and putting women's health at rick.
While the description on the ballot will sound like it's about protecting women's health, the text of the amendment shows that it's really about expanding abortion, offering legal protection to those who help procure abortions, and undermining parental rights. Learn why anyone who cares about unborn babies, women, and families should VOTE NO on Amendment 1 this fall.

Nearly 40,000 abortions happen in Virginia every year, because the state already some of the most permissive abortion laws in the U.S. If this amendment passes, even the few restrictions currently in state law could be challenged as unconstitutional and overturned, which means even more abortions.
By reducing offering legal protection to "individuals" who help provide abortions (which could include boyfriends, teachers, and sex traffickers), the amendment will encourage people who are not qualified healthcare professionals to get involved in abortions, increasing the risk of harm to women.
Again, using the term "individuals" opens up a variety of problems. The amendment makes abortion a fundamental right not for women specifically, but instead for "individuals," which will include underage girls. That would allow girls under age 18 to get abortions without their parents' knowledge or consent.
